Mrs. Determan

We are having a wonderful week in kindergarten and they are learning so much!  I’m so proud of each and every student as they are making some really great growth in reading, math, and behavior.  Here are just a few things from this week and some reminders:

  1. We have library tomorrow THURSDAY!!!  Please return all library books so they can check out.  Last week only 8 of 20 students got to check out.

  2. We have been really busy learning our Jolly Phonics so please make sure to practice and review as their “homework” each night.  This week we have focused on R, M, D, G, O.  In addition to the letters and sounds they should already know s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, h.  This is the 1st step in building readers so we focus on it lots.

  3. We have also really been working on learning our 1st 20 of 80 sight words.  This is our green list and you will see a paper with a baggie stapled to it in your child’s backpack tomorrow.  Please don’t lose these and use them to practice.  See the green sheet for ideas of games to play.  A favorite is memory and they draw 1 lime green and 1 light green card.  Please feel free to ask if you have any other questions or share if you have any new ideas!

  4. We adopted a tree to study during science this year.  It is the cutest thing to watch them at recess go and examine or observe our tree!  The attached picture is our tree.

  5. We are learning about ordering numbers in math and they are getting to be experts at ordering 0-5 but many need additional help with practicing ordinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth, fifth).  A great practice strategy at home would be lining up 5 toys in a line and asking them which is first or which one is third?  Food is also a great thing you can add in while they are eating their snack.

  6. Those who ordered books, they are in your child’s backpack.  Thank you for supporting our classroom library.  One of the free books I got for the classroom is a Pete the Cat Halloween book that is the classic… the 1st pumpkin said which fits perfectly into our math!  The kids really enjoy getting new books in our classroom.

Thank you so much for sharing them with me!  We have so much fun in kindergarten every day!
